La Habra sits on the border between Orange County and Los Angeles County, and its map shows the classic Southern California pattern: a grid of wide arterial roads enclosing blocks of curving residential streets, shopping centres and schools. To the north the grid ends against the Puente Hills, where streets become winding lanes.
The name comes from the Spanish for a pass through the hills, a reference to the gap that early travellers used. The city grew from citrus and avocado groves, and its historic railway depot from the 1920s now houses a children's museum.
