Te mapa
Labasa is the largest town on Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, and sits on the Labasa River a short way inland from the northern coast. The map shows a compact shopping centre beside the river and homes spreading along the roads out of town. A wide lowland of cane fields lies between the town and the sea.
Sugar has shaped Labasa for more than a century. A sugar mill stands close to town, and narrow cane railway lines and farm roads cross the plain around it. Much of the population is Indo-Fijian, descended from workers brought to the cane fields, and the town's markets and temples reflect that heritage.
A Labasa map poster also sits close to a line of its own: the 180th meridian crosses Vanua Levu not far to the east. In black and white, the curving river, the grid of the town centre and the patchwork of cane farms make a composition that feels both local and connected to the wider world.
The river winds past the town centre toward the northern coast. Its curves set the direction of the main streets and give the map a natural focal line.
Around town, flat farmland is split into small cane plots and crossed by narrow cane railways and farm roads. Together they cover the map with a fine, regular texture.
To the north the land flattens toward the sea, where mangroves and tidal channels replace the fields and soften the edge of the composition.

Koteā ko Labasa
Many people from Labasa now live in Suva, New Zealand, Australia or Canada, and a map of the town keeps the river, the market and the road to the family farm close. It is also a fitting keepsake for anyone who has worked or taught in the Northern Division.
