Lalgudi is a town in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu, a short distance northeast of the city of Trichy. It lies in the fertile country around the Kollidam, the northern branch of the Kaveri, where irrigation channels and paddy fields make up much of the landscape. From above, the town is a compact cluster within that green, watered plain.
The town's temple streets form its oldest core, and the rest of Lalgudi spreads along the main roads outward. The name is widely known through the violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman, whose family came from the town and who became one of the great figures of Carnatic music.
