Lençóis Paulista lies in the interior of São Paulo state, in rolling farm country far from the coast. Like many towns in the region, it was planned as a grid: straight streets meeting at right angles, forming square blocks that spread out from the historic centre. The Rio Lençóis runs past the town, and its winding course and green margins break up the grid where the streets meet the river valley.
