Lerum lies about twenty kilometres east of Gothenburg in Västra Götaland, along the valley of the Säveån river. The town stretches along the river and the Western Main Line railway, which gives it direct commuter connections to the city. From above, the built area follows the valley floor, while forested hills and granite ridges rise on either side.
Lakes are a defining feature of the map. Aspen lies just to the east of the town, and the larger Mjörn is a short distance to the northeast. Between them, the Säveån winds through meadows and residential areas. Neighbourhoods on the slopes have curving streets that follow the terrain, typical of Swedish suburban planning in hilly country.
