Liangshui lies in the mountainous south of Gansu province, in the Longnan area, a region of steep ridges and narrow river valleys that is very different from the dry corridor of northern Gansu. Here, towns grow wherever the valley floor opens up enough to build.
Because of this setting, the town does not have a regular grid. Its streets follow the valley, with a main road running along the river and shorter lanes climbing a little way up the hillsides before stopping where the ground becomes too steep.
A Liangshui map poster emphasises this relationship between terrain and town. The built-up area forms a long, narrow shape along the valley, the river runs close beside it, and roads leave town following side valleys between the ridges. Much of the print is blank space, which suggests the mountains that enclose the town.
