Lichuan Zhen is a town in Gansu province, in the hilly south of the province, where the land rises toward the high ground between the Loess Plateau and the mountains beyond. On a map, the town is defined by its valley. Buildings and roads fill the flat floor, and the slopes on either side stay largely open.
In landscapes like this, settlement follows the watercourse. The main road usually runs parallel to the river, and smaller lanes climb only a short way before the ground gets too steep. Outside the centre, terraced fields and scattered villages cling to the lower hillsides.
