Lysychansk stands on the right bank of the Siverskyi Donets in Luhansk Oblast. Across the river lies Sievierodonetsk, and the two cities face each other over a broad floodplain of oxbows, wetland and woods. The river loops heavily here, and on a map its bends frame the southern city like a drawn border.
The land rises sharply from the water. Lysychansk is built on uneven, hilly ground, and its streets follow ridges and drop into ravines instead of forming a regular grid. Coal mining shaped the town from the eighteenth century onward. Heavy industry followed, including a large oil refinery on the outskirts.
