Te mapa
Ma On Shan is a new town in the Sha Tin district of Hong Kong's New Territories, built mostly from the 1980s onward on reclaimed land along the eastern shore of Tolo Harbour. On a map it forms a narrow band of development between the water and the mountain that gives it its name, which rises steeply to around 700 metres directly behind the town.
Before the new town, the area was known for an iron mine on the mountain slopes, which operated for much of the twentieth century. Today Ma On Shan is a residential area of high-rise estates, connected to the rest of Hong Kong by the Tuen Ma line and by roads along the harbour. A long waterfront promenade and cycle track follow the shoreline.
A Ma On Shan map poster shows the familiar Hong Kong combination of dense towers, steep hills and water. The shoreline runs along one side, with estates packed onto the flat reclaimed land, while the mountain slopes fill the other side with open space. It is a clean, dramatic composition that says a great deal about how the city makes room.
The town follows the curve of the harbour, and its waterfront promenade traces a long line between the residential estates and the calm water of the inlet.
The mountain rises sharply behind the town, and its slopes and country park leave a large blank area on the map that contrasts with the dense estates below.
Much of the town stands on land reclaimed from the harbour, which shows on the map as flat, regular blocks with straight edges along the shoreline.

Koteā ko Ma On Shan
Ma On Shan is hung by families who have lived in its estates since the new town was built, cyclists who ride along the harbour and hikers who know the mountain. The map brings water, towers and peak together in one frame.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with your estate name or a family date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters are available on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
