Mahdia sits on the Tunisian coast of the Mediterranean, where a slender rocky peninsula pushes east into the sea. The Fatimid caliph al-Mahdi founded the city here in the early tenth century and made it his capital, choosing the site for its defensive position, and on a map the logic is still obvious: water on three sides, and a single narrow approach from land.
The old medina fills the peninsula, entered through the Skifa el-Kahla, the massive gate that once closed the landward side. Inside, lanes are short and tightly packed, leading toward the Great Mosque, the harbour and, at the tip, a fort and seaside cemetery facing open water.
West of the medina the modern town spreads out in a broader grid, and a long line of beaches and hotels runs along the coast to the north. A Mahdia map poster draws the peninsula, the fishing port and the curving shore as one strong, graphic shape against the sea.

The great gate at the base of the peninsula marks the boundary between the medina and the newer town, where tight lanes meet a broader street grid.

The port, one of the busier fishing harbours on this coast, forms a set of angular basins and breakwaters on the edge of the old town.
