Te mapa
Mandera sits at the far north-eastern tip of Kenya, where the borders of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia meet. The Daua River runs along the northern edge of the area and forms the boundary with Ethiopia. It is a thin, winding line of water and green in otherwise very dry land, and from above it is the most noticeable natural feature.
The town is laid out on flat semi-arid ground. Its streets are wide, straight and mostly unpaved, set in loose blocks of compounds and markets, and the built-up area sits close to settlements across the borders. As the headquarters of Mandera County, it is an administrative and trading centre for a large pastoral region.
A Mandera map poster is spare in the best sense. It shows an open street pattern, the curving line of the river and plenty of empty space around the town. For people from this corner of Kenya, it records a place that is rarely drawn with much care, and shows it clearly and with dignity.
The river curves along the northern edge of the area, marking the border with Ethiopia and forming the only strong natural line in a dry, flat landscape.
The town lies close to where Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia meet, so the map covers a small area where three countries come together.
Wide, straight streets and large compound plots give the town a loose, spacious grid with plenty of blank space between the lines.

Koteā ko Mandera
Many people from Mandera now live in Nairobi or abroad, and a map of the home town is a simple way to keep it visible every day. The open layout and the river line make a calm, minimal image.
