Te mapa
Manhuaçu lies in eastern Minas Gerais, in the mountainous region known as the Matas de Minas. The town occupies a narrow valley along the Manhuaçu River, and on the map it stretches lengthwise, squeezed between hills. Streets follow the river and the valley floor, while neighbourhoods climb the slopes on winding roads.
The hills around the town are covered with coffee plantations, and Manhuaçu is one of the main centres of a region well known for its coffee. It is also a crossroads: the BR-116 and BR-262 highways meet nearby, linking the town to Belo Horizonte, the coast and Rio de Janeiro.
A Manhuaçu map poster shows how much the land dictates the city. The central streets run tight along the river, the outlying neighbourhoods branch up the valleys like leaves on a stem, and the highways thread through the only available gaps. In black and white, the pattern looks both dense and delicate.
The river runs along the valley floor, and the town's main streets follow its course, giving the whole city a long, narrow shape on the map.
Residential areas climb the slopes on curving roads, spreading into side valleys and producing a branching, organic outline around the centre.
The BR-116 and BR-262 meet near the town, and their routes cut through the hills as long, deliberate lines connecting it to the wider state.
