Marion sits on the flat farmland of central Ohio, and from above it has the classic shape of a Midwestern county seat. A regular grid of streets surrounds the downtown and its courthouse. Marion is best known as the hometown of Warren G. Harding, the twenty-ninth president. His house, from which he ran his front-porch campaign in 1920, and the circular marble Harding Memorial are the city's main landmarks. Marion also has a long industrial history: steam shovels built here helped dig the Panama Canal. Today the town hosts an annual popcorn festival.
