Te mapa
Marrero lies on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, across the water from New Orleans. Like much of the region, it is organised by the river: streets begin near the levee and run inland in long parallel lines, cut across by the Westbank Expressway and a network of drainage canals that keep the low ground dry.
The community takes its name from Louis H. Marrero, a local landowner and politician of the early twentieth century. Its layout echoes the long-lot pattern common along the lower Mississippi, with narrow strips of land stretching back from the water. A Marrero map poster makes that ribbon-like structure unusually clear.
South of the built-up area, the grid runs out into swamp and marsh. The Barataria Preserve, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, lies just beyond, and at wider zooms the map shifts from streets to waterways, bayous and open wetland, a reminder of how narrow the dry land is here.
The Mississippi forms the northern edge of the map, a broad curve lined by the levee, with streets aligned roughly perpendicular to the water.
The elevated expressway cuts through Marrero parallel to the river, a strong horizontal line separating the older riverside blocks from newer suburban streets.
To the south, the bayous and marsh of the Barataria Preserve replace the street grid, adding fine, irregular water lines to the lower part of the frame.

Koteā ko Marrero
Marrero is home to families who have lived on the West Bank for generations, and to many who crossed the river from New Orleans. A map poster records the specific strip of land between levee and swamp that defines daily life here.
