Te mapa
Matéri is a town in the Atakora department of north-western Benin, close to the border with Burkina Faso. It is not far from Pendjari National Park, one of the most important wildlife reserves in West Africa. The surrounding land is open savanna. On a map the town appears as a compact settlement where roads meet, with farmland and scattered villages around it.
Matéri's plan is informal and spreading. A denser centre forms where the main roads meet, and residential quarters extend outward from there in irregular blocks, with compounds, gardens and tracks filling the gaps. The wider Atakora region is known for its traditional fortified earthen houses, the tata somba, and the dispersed homesteads around town reflect that rural pattern.
A Matéri map poster is made for people with ties to the town and its villages, and for travellers who passed through on the way to the Pendjari. In monochrome, the loose streets and open savanna become a soft, airy composition that suits a calm interior.
The main routes through town meet at its centre, and the map is organised around them, with the densest built-up area close to where they cross.
Residential areas extend outward in irregular blocks, compounds and garden plots. This loose texture thins gradually toward the edges of town.
Beyond the town, open savanna, fields and scattered homesteads fill the frame, recalling the rural landscape of the Atakora and the approach to the Pendjari.
