Te mapa
Maués lies in the state of Amazonas, on the banks of the Maués-Açu river, in a region where rivers are the main roads. From above, the town is a compact grid along a curving shoreline, with water on one side and dense forest on the other. Channels, lakes and river islands spread around it, turning the edges of the map into a complex pattern of water and land.
The town is best known as the home of guaraná. The plant is native to this part of the Amazon, and the Sateré-Mawé people were cultivating it long before it became the basis of Brazil's popular soft drinks. Maués holds an annual guaraná festival, and the crop remains central to its identity and economy.
A Maués map poster shows what a river town really looks like: a waterfront where boats dock, a few streets leading back from the shore, and then the forest. In monochrome, the river becomes the largest shape on the sheet, and the town reads as a small, precise pattern on its bank.
The town faces the river along a curving shoreline, where the port and the riverside streets form the most active edge of the map.
Behind the shore, the town is laid out in a short, regular grid of streets that stops abruptly where the forest begins.
Channels, islands and lakes surround the town, making water the dominant shape and showing why travel here depends on boats.
