Te mapa
Mettupalayam sits in western Tamil Nadu at the base of the Nilgiri Hills. On the map, the town lies where the flat plains around Coimbatore meet the steep slopes that lead up toward Ooty. The Bhavani river flows past the town, and roads and rail lines gather here before heading into the hills.
The town is best known as the starting point of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a rack railway that climbs from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam. It is part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mettupalayam is also a busy trading town for vegetables and other produce coming down from the hills.
A Mettupalayam map poster shows a town at a clear turning point in the landscape. Streets are laid out on the flatter ground and the railway line runs through the centre. On one side, the land starts to rise. It is a picture of the place where every journey into the Nilgiris begins.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway starts here and runs toward the hills. On the map, the line crosses the town before heading up into the Nilgiris.
The river passes close to the town, its curves adding an organic line to the plains. It flows down from the hills and out toward the east.
The street grid ends where the Nilgiri slopes begin, and the change from flat plain to mountain is easy to see on the map.

Koteā ko Mettupalayam
For people who have ridden the toy train to Ooty or grew up in the Coimbatore region, Mettupalayam marks the start of the journey into the hills. A map of it is a small, specific memory to keep on the wall.
