Te mapa
Meulaboh is the capital of West Aceh Regency, on the western coast of Sumatra facing the Indian Ocean. From above it is a coastal town on flat land, with a long shoreline along its edge, a river reaching the sea nearby, and a street network extending inland toward plantations, rice fields and the forested hills of the Barisan range.
The town was among the places closest to the epicentre of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, and the tsunami that followed caused enormous destruction here. Much of Meulaboh was rebuilt in the years after. It is also associated with Teuku Umar, a hero of the Acehnese resistance against Dutch colonial rule, who died near the town in 1899.
A Meulaboh map poster records the town as it stands today, with its coastline, river channels and grid of rebuilt streets. In black and white, the strong edge of the ocean against the town gives the composition a quiet weight, and the roads leading along the coast and inland frame it clearly.
The shoreline runs along the town in a long, gentle line, the defining edge of the map and the town's constant horizon.
A river reaches the sea near the town, its mouth and channels breaking the coastline and adding curving lines to the composition.
Main routes run along the coast and inland toward the hills, linking Meulaboh to the rest of Aceh through a largely rural landscape.
