Middletown lies on the Great Miami River in southwestern Ohio, between Cincinnati and Dayton. The river curves along the western side of the city. From above, the streets spread out from the older downtown near the water toward newer neighbourhoods and highways to the east.
The city's modern history is tied to steel. The American Rolling Mill Company, later Armco and then AK Steel, was founded here at the turn of the twentieth century. Its large works still occupy a broad tract of land, which stands out on the map as a zone of long buildings and rail lines.
