Te mapa
Mikuni is on the coast of Fukui Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan, and is now part of the city of Sakai. It grew around the mouth of the Kuzuryū River, which drains much of Fukui's interior, and for centuries it served as a port where coastal trading ships called. The old merchant quarter still reflects that trade.
On a map the river mouth and harbour take up one side of the town, with piers and breakwaters drawing sharp lines into the water. The older streets run close together along the river, while newer neighbourhoods extend onto the higher ground. North along the coast the street pattern gives way to the rocky shoreline of the Echizen coast.
That shoreline includes Tōjinbō, a row of tall basalt columns along the sea and one of Fukui's best-known sights. A Mikuni map poster brings together river, port and coast in one frame, a good fit for anyone with ties to Fukui or memories of the cliffs in winter light.
The broad river reaches the sea here, and its final curve with the harbour works forms the strongest shape on the map.
Narrow streets along the riverbank mark the historic merchant district, a dense strip of fine lines beside the water.
To the north the coast becomes rugged and irregular near Tōjinbō, giving the print a textured edge against the open sea.
