Te mapa
Mima lies in the western part of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku, following the valley of the Yoshino River. On a map the city is long and narrow: settlements and roads line both banks of the river, while the land rises steeply to the south into the Shikoku mountains, toward the high country around Mount Tsurugi.
The Wakimachi district is known for its udatsu, the raised firewalls built by prosperous merchants during the era of the indigo trade. The preserved street runs close to the river and appears on the map as a tight, linear strip of old lots, a small but precise mark of the town's past as a trading post on the Yoshino.
A Mima map poster shows how a city can be shaped almost entirely by a river valley: the curve of the water, the roads and bridges following it, and the steep, forested land that leaves wide empty areas on either side. It makes a strong composition in either portrait or landscape crop.
One of Shikoku's major rivers runs through Mima, and its broad channel forms the backbone of the map, with bridges connecting the settlements on each bank.
The historic Wakimachi merchant street, lined with plastered houses and firewalls from the indigo era, appears as a narrow, dense strip near the river.
South of the valley the terrain climbs quickly into forested mountains, so the road network thins into a few winding routes across large open areas.
