Te mapa
Minami-Alps is laid out in two very different halves. The eastern part sits on the floor of the Kofu Basin, a broad alluvial fan built up by the Kamanashi River and its tributaries, where roads and farm plots form a close, irregular mesh. To the west the streets end almost at once, and the land climbs steeply into the Akaishi Mountains, known in Japan as the Southern Alps.
The city was created in 2003 when several towns and villages in western Yamanashi merged, and it takes its name from the range that fills most of its territory. Within its boundary stands Kita-dake, the second-highest mountain in Japan after Fuji. On a Minami-Alps map poster the mountain side is almost empty of lines, a few valley roads following rivers deep into the range.
The basin side tells a farming story. The fan's gravelly, well-drained soil suits fruit, and the area is known for cherries, peaches, grapes and plums grown in orchards between the settlements. From above, the old town centres show up as small clusters of denser streets, linked by roads that run downslope towards the river and across the basin towards Kofu.
The eastern districts sit on a wide alluvial fan, and the riverbeds that cross it show as broad pale bands cutting through the fine mesh of farm roads.
West of the basin the street network stops abruptly. Beyond it lie steep, nearly roadless mountains, with only a few narrow routes tracing valleys towards the high peaks.
Formed from several former towns, the city has no single core. Separate clusters of denser streets are scattered across the fan, each an old centre in its own right.

Koteā ko Minami-Alps
Minami-Alps suits people who know it through its mountains or its orchards: hikers who have climbed Kita-dake, families from the fruit villages, or anyone who has watched the range rise behind the Kofu Basin. The empty western half gives the print unusual balance.
Set the title, subtitle and coordinates to mark a climb or a hometown, then pick one of five styles. Paper and Sand bring out the warm tone of the farmland, while Classic black and white keeps the contrast between basin and mountains sharp.
