Te mapa
Minamiuonuma lies in the southern part of Niigata Prefecture, in a long valley surrounded by mountains. The Uono River runs along the valley floor, and towns and villages line its banks, linked by roads and the railway. Much of the flat land is covered in rice fields, while forests and steep slopes rise on either side. The street network is thin, following the shape of the valley.
This part of Japan is known as snow country, with some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world for inhabited areas. The winters bring skiers to resorts on the nearby slopes. The region is also famous for Uonuma Koshihikari rice, often considered among the best in Japan. The Joetsu Shinkansen passes through, connecting the valley with Tokyo.
A Minamiuonuma map poster looks very different from a dense city grid. Most of the design is open space, with long roads and the river running through the valley and small clusters of streets where towns sit. The mountains around the edges are almost empty on the map, which gives the poster a calm, spacious feel suited to a quiet room.
The river runs down the middle of the valley and ties the towns together. On the poster, it forms a long, gentle line through open rice fields.
Steep, forested hills close in on both sides of the valley. They leave wide empty areas on the map, framing the settlements in the middle.
The Joetsu Shinkansen crosses the valley, linking it with Tokyo. Its smooth, straight route stands out against the winding local roads.
