Te mapa
Mizusawa is a town in Iwate Prefecture, now part of the city of Ōshū after a merger in 2006. It lies on the western side of the Kitakami river, in a broad basin of rice fields and farmsteads, with the Ou Mountains forming the western horizon. From above, the town is compact, with a central grid around the station and roads spreading out into the farmland.
Mizusawa is home to an astronomical observatory founded in 1899 to study the variation of latitude, now part of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. The town is also a traditional centre of Nambu ironware, the cast-iron kettles and pots associated with Iwate. Several notable figures, including the scholar Takano Chōei and the statesman Gotō Shinpei, were born here.
A Mizusawa map poster shows a quiet provincial town set in a wide rural landscape. The dense centre, the straight lines of the railway and highway, the river to the east and the patchwork of fields all around make a calm, balanced composition, fitting for a place known for both scientific work and a long craft tradition.
The river runs to the east of the town through a wide floodplain, a long curving line that frames Mizusawa on one side.
The site of the historic latitude observatory, now part of Japan's national astronomy network, forms a distinct open area within the town.
Farmland surrounds the town in a fine patchwork of fields and scattered homesteads, a characteristic landscape of the Kitakami basin.
