Te mapa
Morganton is the county seat of Burke County, North Carolina, set in the upper Catawba River valley with the Blue Ridge Mountains rising to the west. The old courthouse square sits at the heart of a compact downtown grid, and from there the streets spread outward over rolling ground, bending around hills and creek valleys. Interstate 40 runs along the southern side of town.
Morganton is closely associated with Senator Sam Ervin, who chaired the Senate Watergate committee and lived here. The town is also home to the North Carolina School for the Deaf and Broughton Hospital. Nearby, Lake James and the rugged Linville Gorge draw hikers, paddlers and anglers into the mountains.
A Morganton map poster shows a town that grew outward from a single square, its early grid giving way to curving residential streets as the land rises. The Catawba River and its tributaries trace looping lines along the northern edge, and the interstate adds a strong horizontal stroke to the south, framing the town neatly.
The historic square anchors downtown Morganton, with a regular grid of blocks around it that stands out clearly from the looser streets beyond.
The river winds through the valley north of town in broad curves, along with creeks that shape the placement of neighbourhoods and roads.
The interstate crosses the southern side of Morganton in a long, steady line, linking the town with Asheville to the west and Hickory to the east.
