Mount Pleasant is the county seat of Isabella County, in the centre of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The city is laid out on a largely regular grid, typical of the Midwest, with a compact downtown and residential blocks extending in every direction. The Chippewa River winds through the town, its banks lined with a chain of parks that breaks up the straight streets.
Central Michigan University takes up a large part of the south side.
