Te mapa
Mozhaysk lies in the west of Moscow Oblast, on the upper reaches of the Moskva River, along the historic road from Moscow to Smolensk and Minsk. It is one of the oldest towns in the region. For centuries it guarded the western approach to Moscow, and its kremlin stood on a hill above the river.
The map shows a town set on the slopes of the Moskva valley. An older centre gathers around the hill of the former kremlin, where St Nicholas Cathedral still stands, and the Luzhetsky Monastery lies beside the river. Later districts stretch along the main roads, and the railway and the modern highway run along the southern side of town.
About twelve kilometres to the west is Borodino, the site of the 1812 battle between Napoleon's army and the Russian forces. A Mozhaysk map poster shows the town at the centre of that historic landscape.
The former kremlin stood on high ground above the Moskva. St Nicholas Cathedral still marks the spot, forming the historic core around which the old town is arranged.
Near its source, the Moskva is a small, winding river. Its valley divides the town and gives the map its natural contours.
The historic road west leads towards the Borodino battlefield of 1812, just beyond town, linking Mozhaysk to one of the best-known sites in Russian history.
