Mudong is a town in Banan district, in the eastern part of Chongqing municipality, on the banks of the Yangtze. As elsewhere in the region, the map is shaped by water and slope: the river sweeps past in a broad curve, and the built-up area occupies the lower ground before the hills rise behind it.
Streets here rarely run straight for long. They follow the riverbank, bend around ridges and switch back up slopes, giving the town an irregular, layered pattern. Outside the centre, small roads wind through hilly farmland and link scattered villages.
