Te mapa
Mwanza is Tanzania's second-largest city and its main port on Lake Victoria. It sits where the lake's southern shore breaks into bays, gulfs and peninsulas, so the shoreline on a map is long and irregular. Rocky hills rise directly behind the waterfront, and neighbourhoods climb their slopes in dense patterns that follow the contours rather than a grid.
The best-known symbol of the city is Bismarck Rock, a stack of balanced granite boulders standing in the water just off the shore. Similar outcrops appear across the area, and on a Mwanza map poster they show as gaps in the street network where the ground is too steep or stony to build on. The lake fills a large part of the frame, which makes the composition unusually open.
Ferries link Mwanza with Ukerewe Island and other lake ports, and the city is a centre of the region's fishing industry, especially Nile perch. The railway reaches the port from the east and connects the lake with Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast. The map brings these elements together: a working lakeside city shaped by rock, water and trade routes.
The city's edge follows a complex line of bays and headlands. Open water covers much of the map and gives the dense streets a calm counterweight.
Rocky hills and boulder fields appear throughout the city as blank patches. Around them the streets curve, divide and climb, following the shape of the stone.
The harbour and railway meet near the centre. Straight rail lines and quays form the most geometric part of an otherwise organic layout.

Koteā ko Mwanza
Mwanza's meeting of rock and water is unlike any other city in East Africa, and the map makes a meaningful keepsake for people from the lake region or anyone who has lived there. It works well in a large format.
