Sengerema lies in Mwanza Region in northwestern Tanzania, on the western side of the Mwanza Gulf of Lake Victoria. On a map the town appears as a cluster of streets gathered around a main road, with smaller tracks radiating into the farmland and villages around it. To the east, the gulf and the lake shore give the wider area a strong, irregular edge.
The town serves as a local centre for a largely agricultural district, where smallholdings, fields and scattered homesteads cover the rolling land. Travellers between Mwanza city and the west of the region have long crossed the gulf, and the main road through the area links Sengerema with that crossing and with towns further west toward Geita.
