Te mapa
Naka-niida is the central district of a small town in the northwestern part of Miyagi Prefecture, inland from Sendai and toward the mountains that form the spine of northern Honshu. From above, it appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by carefully divided rice fields.
The pattern is typical of rural Tōhoku: a main street lined with shops and houses, a few side streets, a railway line and then open agricultural land laid out in regular plots. River channels and irrigation ditches run through the fields, and wooded hills rise at the edges of the valley.
A Naka-niida map poster shows this landscape with quiet precision. The dense centre, the linear roads leading out and the fine grid of paddies make a composition that is modest in scale yet clearly structured, a portrait of an inland Japanese town.
The town's centre is built along a principal road, with shops and homes close together, forming the densest part of the map.
Surrounding paddies are divided into neat rectangles by paths and channels, creating an even geometric texture across the lowland.
Hills close in around the plain, and roads leaving town begin to curve as they follow the terrain toward neighbouring communities.
