Te mapa
Namie lies on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture. Its land runs from the Abukuma highlands in the west down through river valleys to a coastal plain and the fishing port of Ukedo. From above, the town centre is a modest grid near the coast, and farmland and rivers extend inland toward wooded hills.
Namie was evacuated after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, and residents began returning to parts of the town in 2017. Before then it was known for Obori-Soma ware pottery and for Namie yakisoba, its thick noodle dish. Both remain part of its identity today.
A Namie map poster records the town's streets, rivers and coastline as they are. The coastal plain, the rivers crossing it, and the central grid make a clear composition. For people who left, those who returned, and those rebuilding, it is a careful picture of a place that is still being lived in.
A long, fairly straight shoreline runs along the eastern edge, with Ukedo port and the mouths of local rivers marking it.
Rivers flow east from the highlands across the plain. They cut long lines through the farmland toward the sea.
The central streets form a compact grid on flat ground near the coast. It is the densest part of the map.
