Nānjikkottai lies just outside Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, in the delta country of the Cauvery. This is one of the oldest farmed landscapes in South India, and from above it has a fine, even texture of small fields, irrigation channels and tanks, with roads and village streets running between them.
The settlement has grown as Thanjavur has spread outward, so the map shows a meeting of two patterns. On one side are the denser streets of the expanding city. On the other are the rectangles of paddy land and the thin lines of canals that carry water through the delta. Main roads leave Thanjavur in straight spokes and cut across both.
