Nantwich Map Poster & Print
Nantwich is a market town in south Cheshire, set on the River Weaver. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of streets around St Mary's Church, with the river along its western edge and roads radiating out to Crewe, Chester and Whitchurch. Newer housing forms a wider ring, and beyond it the flat Cheshire farmland takes over.
Salt made Nantwich. Brine springs were worked here from Roman times through the Middle Ages, and the town's name belongs to the Cheshire family of wiches. In 1583 a fire destroyed much of the centre, and the rebuilding explains the many black-and-white timbered buildings on the high street. The Battle of Nantwich was fought just outside town in 1644, during the Civil War.

River Weaver
The Weaver runs along the west side of the centre, crossed by the old bridge. Its meadows and riverside paths add an open green band to the plan.
Radiating roads
Welsh Row, Hospital Street and other old routes leave the centre in several directions. Together they give Nantwich a star-shaped outline that reads clearly from above.
