Te mapa
Nawāpāra, often called Gobra Nawapara, lies in the plains of central Chhattisgarh on the bank of the Mahanadi. On a map the river is the most striking thing: a broad, braided channel with sandbars, much wider than any street in town. The settlement spreads away from the bank in a loose web of lanes and roads.
Across the river sits Rajim, near the meeting point of the Mahanadi with its tributaries, a well-known pilgrimage place in the state. Together the two towns form a pair facing each other over the water, linked by a road bridge. A Nawāpāra map poster picks up that relationship between the town, the bridge and the wide riverbed.
Beyond the built-up area the map opens into farmland, much of it rice fields, crossed by village roads and small water channels. This is typical country for the Chhattisgarh plain, sometimes called the rice bowl of India, and the flat land lets the river's curves stand out on paper.
The river runs wide and shallow beside the town, with sandbars and several channels. In a black-and-white print it forms a pale, flowing band through the design.
A road crossing joins Nawāpāra to Rajim on the opposite side, and it is the one straight line cutting across the curving shape of the river.
Outside town, lanes and small channels cross level fields, making a fine, uneven pattern around the denser core.
