Te mapa
New Britain sits in central Connecticut, a little southwest of Hartford. Its map is tightly packed: long residential streets, blocks of former factory buildings, rail lines and a downtown where several main roads meet. Route 9 cuts through the city on an elevated line, and the old street pattern fits around it.
The city's nickname is the Hardware City. For generations it was a centre of tool and hardware manufacturing, and Stanley, now Stanley Black & Decker, is still based here. Old factory sites are large rectangles on the map, many close to the railway. Broad Street, in the north, is known as the heart of the city's large Polish community.
Walnut Hill Park, laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, sits on a rise near downtown. Its curved paths are a gentle contrast to the city's straight streets. Central Connecticut State University occupies a campus to the west. A New Britain map poster captures an industrial city that is compact, layered and firmly rooted in New England.
Frederick Law Olmsted's park crowns a hill near the centre. Its winding paths and open lawns look soft and organic next to the rigid city grid.
Big rectangular lots near the rail lines mark where the hardware and tool industry once worked around the clock. They record the city's industrial past.
The highway crosses the city as a long, bold line. It cuts through the older street pattern and ties New Britain to the rest of the region.
