Te mapa
Long Island extends more than 150 kilometres east from New York Harbor into the Atlantic. Its western end is fully urban: Brooklyn and Queens are part of New York City and form a dense grid. Moving east, the street pattern loosens into the suburbs of Nassau and Suffolk counties, then into farmland, woods and small villages.
At its eastern end the island splits into two peninsulas. The North Fork is known for farms and vineyards, and the South Fork for the Hamptons and Montauk Point, where a lighthouse commissioned under George Washington stands at the tip. Peconic Bay fills the space between the forks. Long Island Sound runs along the northern coast, and the southern coast is lined with long barrier beaches.
A Long Island map poster shows how one landmass holds big-city density, classic postwar suburbs and a rural east. Expressways and parkways run its length like stripes. Jones Beach and Fire Island form thin strips of sand along the Atlantic side, separated from the mainland by shallow bays and marshes.
The North Fork and South Fork split the eastern end of the island around Peconic Bay, which gives Long Island its well-known fishtail outline.
Along the southern shore, long thin islands of sand, including Fire Island and Jones Beach, run parallel to the coast with lagoons behind them.
The island's western end is part of New York City, where dense street grids stand out sharply from the looser suburban pattern further east.

Koteā ko Long Island
Long Island is where millions of people grew up, commute, spend summers or return for the holidays. A print of the whole island connects all of those places, from a Brooklyn apartment to a house on the North Fork.
