Te mapa
Niu Valley lies in East Honolulu on the south shore of Oʻahu, between the neighbouring valleys of ʻĀina Haina and Kuliʻouʻou. Like them, it is a long, narrow valley cut into the flank of the Koʻolau range, opening onto the coast. From above, houses fill the valley floor in a slender strip while steep, largely uninhabited ridges rise on both sides.
The street pattern follows the valley's shape: a main road runs inland along its length, with short residential streets branching off and ending where the slopes become too steep. At the coast, Kalanianaʻole Highway runs along the shore beside Maunalua Bay. A Niu Valley map poster shows this ridge-and-valley rhythm with striking clarity.
Because the valleys of East Honolulu sit side by side like the fingers of a hand, a wider framing reveals a repeating pattern of settled floors and wild ridges along the coast. It is one of the most distinctive landscapes to render in black and white, and immediately recognisable to anyone who knows this part of the island.
Houses and streets occupy the narrow valley floor, while the ridges on either side remain open, so the settled area appears as a long, tapering shape.
At the mouth of the valley, the coastline and the shallow reef flats of Maunalua Bay form the lower edge of the map.
The coastal highway runs across the valley mouth, a single strong horizontal that ties Niu Valley to ʻĀina Haina, Kuliʻouʻou and the rest of East Honolulu.
