Te mapa
Norrköping grew around the Motala ström, a river that falls in a series of rapids through the city centre before reaching the Bråviken bay of the Baltic Sea. Its water power made Norrköping one of Sweden's leading industrial cities, and the textile mills built along the river earned it a reputation as the Manchester of Sweden.
The mill buildings remain today as the Industrial Landscape, one of the best-preserved in Europe, now home to a museum, a university campus and the Louis De Geer concert hall. Around it, the city centre follows a regular grid of streets with broad avenues, crossed by the tram network.
A Norrköping map poster shows the river winding through the grid, the islands and bridges of the mill district and the wide waters of Bråviken to the east. In black and white, the combination of straight streets and flowing water creates a clear, elegant image, rooted in the city's industrial past.
The river flows through the centre in rapids and channels, dividing the old mill district into islands and crossed by numerous bridges, the heart of the city's map.
Former textile mills line the river in a compact district of large buildings, now converted into museums, a university campus and a concert hall.
The city centre follows a regular grid with wide tree-lined avenues, a clear pattern that sets the river's curves and the mill district in sharp relief.

Norrköping speaks to students at the Campus Norrköping, to families who worked in the mills, and to anyone drawn to Swedish industrial heritage. The river and grid make a strong graphic for a Scandinavian home.
