Northdale lies in Hillsborough County, Florida, in the suburban belt north of Tampa. Its map is defined by the contrast between a few long, straight roads and the curving streets of the neighbourhoods between them. Each subdivision forms its own pocket, entered from the main roads and closed off by cul-de-sacs and loops.
Water is everywhere in this part of Florida: small lakes, ponds and wetlands fill gaps between the houses and give the plan its irregular edges. On a Northdale map poster, these patches of water break up the residential blocks and lend the composition a soft, rhythmic pattern.
The area developed mainly from the 1970s onward, as Tampa's suburbs spread north, and most streets date from that period of subdivision building.
