Te mapa
Nuevo Laredo lies on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, known in Mexico as the Río Bravo, directly opposite Laredo in Texas. On a map the river curves along the northern edge of the city, and bridges reach across it toward the American side. The centre is laid out in a regular grid of blocks and plazas that extends south from the water.
Beyond the historic core the grid continues across flat, dry land, broken by highways, rail lines and large industrial parks where manufacturing plants and logistics yards take up entire blocks. A Nuevo Laredo map poster shows the city as half of a binational pair, with the river as the dividing line and the crossings as the stitches holding the two sides together.
The city was founded in 1848, after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made the Rio Grande the border, by residents of Laredo who wished to remain in Mexico. Today the crossings between Nuevo Laredo and Laredo carry more trade between Mexico and the United States than any other land port, much of it by truck.
The river forms the northern edge of the city and the international border, its curving line separating two street grids that were once a single town.
Several bridges link Nuevo Laredo with Laredo, carrying pedestrians, cars, freight trucks and trains, and drawing short, firm lines across the water.
The old centre is laid out in square blocks and plazas extending south from the river, a regular pattern that sets the direction for the rest of the city.
