Reynosa lies on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, known in Mexico as the Río Bravo, directly across from the McAllen area of Texas. On a map the river forms the northern edge, winding in loops, while the city spreads south in a broad grid. International bridges cross the river at several points, linking the two countries.
The town was founded in 1749 during the Spanish colonisation of Nuevo Santander and later moved to its current site after floods. Today it is one of Mexico's major industrial border cities, home to many maquiladora assembly plants. Large industrial parks show on the map as big rectangular blocks at the edges of the residential grid.
A Reynosa map poster shows the river's meanders against the regular pattern of the city streets. The older centre sits near the river, while newer neighbourhoods and industrial zones reach far to the south and east.
