Te mapa
Obuase, also written Obuasi, lies in the south of Ghana's Ashanti Region, surrounded by rolling, forested hills. On a map the town's streets follow the terrain rather than a grid, curving around ridges and valleys. Neighbourhoods are spread across the slopes, and the mining areas occupy large, distinct parts of the landscape.
The town grew around gold mining, which began here on an industrial scale in the late nineteenth century and continues today. The Obuasi mine is one of the best-known gold mines in West Africa, and its infrastructure shapes the map, with access roads, the railway and processing areas woven through the town.
Beyond the town, farmland and forest cover the hills, and small settlements are scattered along the roads towards Kumasi and the south. An Obuase map poster captures the organic, terrain-driven shape of a mining town in the hills, where almost every street bends to follow the land and mining has left clear marks on the layout.
Streets curve and branch along the slopes, forming an irregular, organic pattern that reflects the town's hilly setting.
Large mining areas and their access roads form distinct shapes on the map, an unmistakable sign of the town's long history with gold.
A railway runs through town towards Kumasi and the coast, drawing a long, curving line through the hills.
