Ōdate Map Poster & Print

Ōdate lies in a basin in the north of Akita Prefecture, with mountains on all sides and the Yoneshiro River flowing across it. From above, the town centre sits on the flat land near the river, and a mix of streets, rail lines and rice paddies fills the valley floor. Forested slopes close in around the edges of the frame.

Ōdate is best known as the home of the Akita dog. Hachikō, the loyal dog honoured with a statue at Shibuya Station in Tokyo, was born near here. The city is also known for magewappa, bentwood boxes made from local cedar, and for the Ōdate Jukai Dome, one of the largest wooden domes in the world.

An Ōdate map poster shows a town shaped by its river and the mountains. The Yoneshiro gives the map a broad curving line, and the regular pattern of rice fields spreads out around the centre. It is a calm, balanced image of a northern Japanese town.

01

Yoneshiro River

The river flows across the basin in wide curves, with the town centre on the flat land beside it. It is the main line running through the whole map.

02

Rice paddy grid

Around the built-up area, rectangular rice fields form a fine, regular pattern. It fills much of the valley floor and contrasts with the curves of the river.

03

Mountain rim

Forested mountains surround the basin, so streets and fields stop where the land starts to rise. This gives the town a clear, enclosed shape.

Koteā ko Ōdate

He mapa ʻe maʻuhiga

Some people hang Ōdate for family roots in Akita, others for the story of Hachikō and the Akita dog. Either way, the map is a modest, precise image of a northern town between river and mountains.

You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a date or your dog's name. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
