Te mapa
Östersund lies on the eastern shore of Storsjön, a large lake in central Sweden. The city climbs gently from the water, with a regular street grid in the centre and newer neighbourhoods spreading out along the shoreline and up the slope. To the west, the island of Frösön sits just across a narrow stretch of water, connected by bridges.
The city is the main centre of Jämtland and is known for winter sport, especially biathlon, which has brought world championships here. It is also known for the Storsjöodjuret, a lake monster of local legend said to live in Storsjön. The open-air museum Jamtli is on the edge of the centre.
An Östersund map poster is shaped by the lake. The shoreline curves along one side, the grid of the centre sits parallel to it, and the island with its own roads and fields fills the water opposite. In black and white the lake becomes a broad open field, and the bridges to Frösön mark the one place where the two shores meet.
The long eastern shore of the lake defines the city's western edge, a smooth curve that shapes the whole composition.
The island of Frösön lies just across the strait, linked to the city by bridges, and has its own network of roads and settlements.
The city centre is laid out in a regular grid of streets running parallel to the lake, with blocks rising in steady rows up the slope.
