Te mapa
Ōfunato sits on the Sanriku coast of Iwate Prefecture, where the Pacific shoreline breaks into long, narrow bays and wooded headlands. The city wraps around the inner end of Ōfunato Bay, and from above the water reaches deep inland like a fjord. Streets fill the small flat areas along the shore and in the valleys, with steep hills rising close behind.
The bay has long supported a fishing port and industry, and the harbour areas show on the map as piers and straight quay lines. The city was badly damaged by the tsunami of March 2011, and much of the waterfront has since been rebuilt, with new sea walls and raised ground changing parts of its outline.
Along the coast nearby, the Goishi Coast is known for its rugged cliffs and rock formations. An Ōfunato map poster traces this intricate meeting of sea and land: jagged peninsulas, a sheltered bay and a town set along its edge. It is one of the more striking coastal compositions in Japan.
The long, sheltered bay cuts deep into the land and takes up much of the map, its shape set by the ria coastline of Sanriku.
Along the inner bay, quays, piers and port facilities form crisp straight lines where the city meets the water.
Wooded ridges and peninsulas surround the bay, keeping the streets confined to narrow valleys and giving the coastline its jagged outline.

Koteā ko Ōfunato
Ōfunato holds deep meaning for its residents and for many people who followed the region's recovery after 2011. A map of the bay and its town is a quiet way to honour that connection.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint and Noir show the coastline especially clearly.
