Te mapa
Oyamazaki is a small town in the southwest of Kyoto Prefecture, set where the slopes of Mount Tennōzan come down close to the confluence of the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers, which join here to form the Yodo. This narrow gap has long been the natural route between Kyoto and Osaka, and on a map railways, expressways and roads crowd together between hillside and river.
The town has a notable place in Japanese history: in 1582 the Battle of Yamazaki was fought here, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Akechi Mitsuhide shortly after the death of Oda Nobunaga. Centuries later, Yamazaki became the site of Japan's first malt whisky distillery, opened by Suntory in 1923. The temple of Myōkian preserves Taian, a tea room attributed to Sen no Rikyū.
An Oyamazaki map poster captures an unusually compressed landscape. Transport lines run in parallel through the valley, the wooded mountain fills one side and the broad rivers open up the other. Between them, small residential streets fit wherever the land allows. For those who know the town, the design reads as a precise record of how history and geography are layered in one place.
The wooded mountain rises directly above the town, and its slopes leave a large open area on one side of the map, crossed by walking trails.
The Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet just across from the town to form the Yodo, a wide expanse of water that anchors the composition.
Railway lines and major roads run side by side through the narrow gap between mountain and river, creating a bundle of parallel lines across the poster.
