Te mapa
Pakan is a small town in the Sarikei Division of Sarawak, on the Malaysian part of Borneo. It serves as the centre of its district. From above the town is modest: a short run of streets and shophouse rows surrounded by far more green space than built-up land. Rivers and hills shape the country around it.
The Pakan area is closely associated with the Iban people, and many communities in the district live in longhouses along the rivers and roads. On a map these settlements are small marks scattered through the countryside. They are linked to the town by thin, winding roads.
A Pakan map poster is mostly quiet space. A few fine lines mark the town centre, and the rest of the frame is made up of the curving roads and waterways that connect it to the surrounding area. It is a spare, intimate portrait of rural Sarawak.
The heart of Pakan is a small group of streets and buildings where the main roads meet. On the poster it forms a clear focal point in an otherwise open landscape.
The roads leaving town follow the hills and river valleys and bend often. These looping lines carry the eye out to the edges of the map.
Streams and rivers wind through the surrounding district. Their irregular curves are one of the defining textures of the Sarawak interior from above.

Koteā ko Pakan
For families from Pakan and its longhouses, or for anyone who has spent time in this part of Sarawak, the map is a way to keep home in view from far away. Add a longhouse name, a family name or a date through the title and subtitle, and keep the exact coordinates.
Paper and Sand suit the green, rural setting. Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint give a crisper, more graphic look. The $9 digital files come in six print sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF.
