Panjim, also known as Panaji, is the capital of Goa. It sits on the south bank of the Mandovi river, where the river widens into the Arabian Sea. The city's core is a tidy grid laid out during Portuguese rule, running back from the waterfront promenade. To the south and east the ground rises into Altinho hill, whose winding roads contrast with the straight blocks below.
The Fontainhas quarter lies at the eastern edge of the centre beside the Ourém creek, with narrow lanes and colourful Portuguese-style houses. Above the main square stands the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, known for its zigzag staircase. Westward, the road through Campal follows the river mouth to Miramar beach, and the coast continues toward the headland of Dona Paula.
A Panjim map poster shows a city defined by water on several sides: the broad Mandovi to the north, the creek to the east and the open sea to the west. Between them, the grid, the hill and the curving shore make a balanced composition. It suits anyone who has lived in Goa, married there, or returns to it year after year.
The wide Mandovi forms the city's northern edge. Its riverside promenade runs straight along the grid before the river opens to the sea, a bold expanse of water on the map.
The old Latin quarter packs narrow lanes against Altinho hill and the Ourém creek, forming a fine, intricate pattern at the eastern edge of the centre.
West of the centre the shore curves south from the river mouth along Miramar beach toward Dona Paula, a long, smooth line against the Arabian Sea.
