Te mapa
Paracatu grew up in the eighteenth century as a gold town, and its map still shows that origin. The oldest streets bend and climb around the historic centre, where churches and low colonial houses line lanes that were never planned as a grid. Around them, twentieth-century neighbourhoods fall into straighter blocks that follow the gentler ground.
The town sits on the cerrado plateau of northwestern Minas Gerais, far from the coast and closer to Brasília than to Belo Horizonte. From above, the urban area looks compact against wide open country, with highways arriving from several directions and fading into long straight roads through farmland. Gold is still part of the story: large-scale mining continues on the edge of town.
A Paracatu map poster sets the tight colonial knot beside the looser modern grid, so the two eras of the town sit side by side on one sheet. In black and white, the contrast between curved old lanes and regular blocks becomes the main subject, and the surrounding empty space says as much about the plateau as the streets do.
The historic core keeps its irregular street pattern from the gold-rush era, with short, bending lanes that stand out clearly against the more orderly blocks built around it later.
Residential districts added during the town's later growth follow straighter lines and larger blocks, giving the map a visible edge where the old town ends and the modern one begins.
Beyond the last streets, the map opens into the cerrado. Roads leave town in long, direct lines, and the emptiness around the urban area frames Paracatu as an island on the plateau.
